Due to the very small root system, whose main mass develops in a 20 cm layer of soil, the onion has high soil requirements. The best and the highest onion yields are achieved on moderately compact, well-structured, adequately moist soils, with a high humus content and rich in nutrients. The best soils are: bogs, loess and peat soils. The optimal pH for mineral soils is 6.5-7.0. Onions are sensitive to deficiencies of: zinc, manganese, copper and molybdenum. If soil analysis has not been performed, the number of mineral fertilizers per hectare at the sites in the first year after applying manure should be: 80-120 kg N, 100-150 kg P2O5, 150-200 kg K2O.
